Procrastination and self control
For the last 2 years I have been positing this video in celebration of the new school year, and all the hopes and promises we make to ourselves that this year things will be different….
Somewhat unsurprisingly, this video is still as relevant as always.
Happy new school year

The Upside of Irrationality, explores some positive and some negative ways that irrationality plays out in our lives.

Does this work to reduce the number of student requests for extensions due to illness/family emergency? I’m guessing that at the very least it reduces the number of extensions at the end of term when you (prof) really want to get marking. I’m thinking about trying this.
PS I’ve used your videos on cheating in courses in sections related to ethics. Thanks for your research and your interesting presentations.
Looks like an awesome video. I’ll try to watch it tomorrow.
Don’t most students simply select the final day of class for all three papers?

This was my favorite chapter in Predictably Irrational! I read the book in the time between getting my undergraduate degree and starting graduate school. I laughed at myself a lot while reading it, too. I’d like to think I kept all of this in mind when I started graduate school, but I suspect I was not as diligent as I had hoped to be. I did start a 20 page paper several months ahead of time, but as the deadline got closer I started to put off going to the library, writing a draft, etc. The first 10 pages of the paper were great!
So here’s hoping for more diligence on my part this year! Or shorter paper assignments.
I like that you acted out the scenario, makes it much easier to watch and listen!
I don’t think I could do this for my undergraduate classes. I teach three classes each semester with no TA. Given my experience, I know I would end up with 200 papers handed in a week before the end of class that I would then be forced to grade in less than two weeks. I like the idea, but I see this as a recipe for insanity, at least in my case. It also prevents me from providing them with needed feedback to improve their writing and logic.
I will admit that I don’t really care if they procrastinate. If they can write their paper the morning its due and it is well done, good for them. If they can’t, they get the grade they earn. How they do their work is not my concern.
I can’t stand when I proscastinate. Cause I know that I am not going to do it until later which ends up not being complete at all. But took steps which is as soon as I am assigned work I get it done no questions ask. Actually helped improve my work quality and effort. Yay!
After I finally got around to reading this today, I got an e-mail with this quote, allegedly by Steven Wright: “Hard work pays off in the future; laziness pays off now.”
I dont get how that helps people not procrastinate all that does is allow them to pick when the want to submit their papers
I dont how this help students learn how to not procrastinate all this does is allow them to be able to pick which date they want to submit their papers
I love this expirement in the book, I actually thought it was one of the expirements that effected me most directly. Also I vow to not procrastinate this year…..yeahh.
Every year I promise that I’m going to get all my homeworks done on time and finish all my projects and essay papers early and I never follow through with my promise. I hate when I procrastinate, but this year I’m not going to make any promises instead I’m going to try my best.
For a bit of fun while getting around to things, check out this brilliant film from Canada’s National Film Board http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0YCoEu9KyE
