Big client / spineless agency relationship in a nutshell. Enlightened despotism trumps democracy in the design process 9 times out of 10, so should it also in the public policy design process? Hmm …
i agree with Anittah, this is worrying but true, definitely has implications for public policy. i mean if the world followed what really works rather than money and power, we wouldn’t have had problems like global warming, obesity, etc…
I agree that the humour in this video is derived from the reality of the situation. Everyone has encountered this situation where specifications are minimal at best, and the deadline is almost always too short.
This is a classic example for Project Managers, and the value of defining scope and sticking to scope. The poor designer in this instance just wants to please his client, and as a result he’s willing to put up with their ineptitude.
I’m of the opinion the best results occur when the client and contractor do more planning up front, agree to the plan, and then execute the plan as agreed upon.
We all encounter versions of this “Stop Sign”. In fact, I’ll bet this team worked on the Aztek.

The Upside of Irrationality
Irrationality is not all bad. In the Upside of irrationality we examine some of the positive effects irrationality have on our lives and offer a new look on the irrational decisions that influence our personal lives and our workplace experiences.
When we make decisions we think we're in control, making rational choices. But are we? Entertaining and surprising, Ariely unmasks the subtle but powerful tricks that our minds play on us.
